Online Gurus and Misinformation
Misinformation around physical and mental health has been running incredibly rampant online, to the point that people can make entire careers off of selling pseudo science bullshit to people who are desperately trying to find the solutions to their problems. Of course, this idea of snake oil salesmen has been around since before the internet. But right now, it feels as though there's so many of these content creators making inaccurate statements that it becomes increasingly difficult to even know what's real anymore.
Unfortunately, a lot of this self help and wellness related content has become its own form of brain rot masquerading as valuable information. And so people continue to consume it in the off chance that it might be useful, when it's actually leading them in completely the wrong direction.
I highly appreciate all of the people coming online to debunk this misinformation, whether it's doctors, researchers, or just regular people who realized that they were getting scammed by some of these self-help gurus. Hopefully more genuine science communicators will pop up in the future to balance out the amount of influencers making misleading content.
